Paper1

232/1

July 2019

Time 2 hours

4. Water flows through a pipe with different cross-section areas at 7.7 x 10-4 m3/s. If the pipe has a of 7mm,

determine the velocity of the water through the pipe at that particular section. (3mks)

5. In an experiment to demonstrate Brownian Motion, smoke was placed in the smoke cell and observed using

microscope. a) State the observation made. (1mk)

b) Explain that observation made. (2mks)

7. Why is our school bus fitted with more and wider wheels than our school van? (2mks)

8. Electric kettle with outer surface dull is less efficient than one with outer surface shiny. Give reson for this (1mk)

9. Fig below shows a uniform bar of length 8m and mass 2kg. A mass of 4kg is suspended at the end of the bar and a

knife edge pivot moved at a distance d to balance the system.

11. A diver is swimming 20m below the surface of water in Indian Ocean. If the density of water in the ocean is

1.03g/cm3, determine the pressure acting on the diver.

SECTION A (55 marks)

b) Figure below shows a horizontal tube containing air trapped by a mercury thread of length 20cm. The length of

the enclosed air is 18cm.

i) Determine the pressure of the enclosed air. (2mks)

ii) ii) The tube is held in a vertical position as shown below:

Determine:

i) The pressure of the enclosed air. (2mks)

ii) The length L of the enclosed air. (2mks)

13. a) Define the term mechanical advantage. (1mk)

14. a) The figure below (drawn to scale) shows a sectiori of a tape attached to a moving trolley.

i) If the trolley was decelerating indicate (on the figure) the direction the tape was pulled. [1 mk]

ii) Determine the velocities.

I AB (3mks)

II CD (2mks)

iii) Hence determine the acceleration of the trolley. (3mks)

15. a) Fig below shows a hydrometer.

i) Why are lead shots fixed at the bottom of hydrometer? (2mks)

ii) In the figure which letter represents a greater density. (1mk)

b) A cork of mass 200g and density 400kg/m3 is completely immersed in water of density 1 g/cm3 and held by a

string as shown in figure below:

i) A part from tension, state two pther forces acting on the cork (2mks)

ii) Show (on the string) the direction of the tension. (1mk)

iii) Determine the tension on the string. (3mks)

16 b) A certain powder of mass 0.2kg was heated in  a container by an electric heater rated 100W. The graph below

shows temperature of the powder with the time:

i) Determine the quantity of heat given out by the heater from the time the powder starts to melt to the time all of it

has melted. (3mks)

ii) Determine the latent heat of fusion of powder. (3mks)

iii) What assumtion have you made in (ii) above? (1mk)

17. a) Define the term angular velocity.  (1mk)

b) A mass of 800g is tied with a string of length 0.4m and whirled in a circular path in a vertical plane. If the speed of

the mass is 30m/s, determine the maximum tension in the string. [3 mks]

c) When is a satellite said to be moving in a parking orbit? (1mk)

d) Figure below shows a conical pendulum for a mass held with a string whirled in a horizontal plane. The . plane is

1.2m below the fixed point P.
