(b) Tallness in pea plants is due to a dominant gene. Two tall pea plants were presented to a certain scientist to ascertain their genotypes, one was homozygous tall while the other was heterozygous tall. Show how the scientist would solve the mystery of knowing the identity of at least one of the plant (4marks)
(b) State two application of knowledge in genetics in medicine genetics by man. (2marks)
4. (a) Define deplasmolysis. (1 mark)
(b) The cells of a herbaceous plant were found to have an average diameter of2.5µm. the cells were placed in varying concentrations of sucrose solution. The average diameter of the cells in each solution was determined and the results obtained were as shown in the table below
(i) From these results, determine the concentration of the cell sap . (1mk)
(ii) What term is given to the sucrose solution whose concentration is equal to that of the cell sap? (1mk)
(iii) Give an explanation for the average diameter of the cells placed in 1 % sucrose solution compared with the normal diameter of the cells. (3 marks)
(iv) Describe the difference in appearance between the cell cytoplasm before and after being placed in 15% sucrose solution (2marks)
5. a) State three homeostatic roles of the mammalian kidney. (3marks)
(b) Two samples of blood were obtained from James; one from the boy’s hepatic vein and the other from his hepatic portal vein. The tests showed that the blood from the hepatic vein had a high glucose level while that from the hepatic portal vein had no glucose.
(i) Name the hormone responsible for the difference in the glucose content in the two blood vessels. (1mark)
(ii) How did the hormone in (b)(i) above influence the blood glucose level in the hepatic vein?(2 marks)
(iii) State two other homeostatic roles of the liver. ( 2marks)
