75% of all Schools in Kenya are sub-county schools. So, the Government has invested heavily in these schools. These schools registered an excellent performance and a total 17,327 attained a mean grade of C+ and above with a 128 getting a mean grade of A- and above.

2021 KCSE Candidature
A total of 826,807 candidates sat for 2021 KCSE examination compared to 747,000 in 2020 KCSE. This is an increase of 10.66%; of the 826,000 who sat for the exam, 421,000 were male and 405,000 were female. Therefore, the gender parity was 50.9% male and 49.12 female.
18 counties had more female candidates than male candidates. These regions include:
- Central
- Taita Taveta
- Machakos
- Kitui
- Meru
- Elgeyo Marakwet
- Kakamega
- Vihiga
- Tharaka Nithi
- Uasin Gishu
- Laikipia
- Kisumu
Performance
Performance we had 11 subjects recording significant improvement this year compared to 19 subjects last year. There was no significant change in seven subjects.
There are 1138 which is 0.14% candidates who scored overall grade of A plain compared to last year’s 0.12%. Therefore, this was an increase.
The number of candidates with a minimum University entrance, ie, C +(plus) and above, rose to 145,000, which is 17.47% as compared to last year which was 143,000 which stood for 19%.
It is the wish of the Government that all the 145,000 students that scored C+ and above joins University or TVET for technical courses. The Government has committed to provide enough money for the students to advance to the next level of education.
The number of candidates with the minimum TVET grade which is C- and above is 39.27%. These candidates can join TVET courses to do Diploma and Certificate courses.
Exam irregularities
The following was reported by Prof. Magoha CS, Cabinet Secretary about exam leakage:
Some KCSE results have been withheld including some for a very big school. A total of 441 cases were reported in 2021 examination and one case of the entire center.
Examination results of the 441 cases have been cancelled.
The 441 cases involved the following irregularities:
- Unauthorized material
- 203 mobile phone
- 223 impassionate
- 8 collusion
- 6 causing disturbance
